pink for a... boy?

An unspoken goal has been reached. The hand-made stuff has become everyday rather than 'Sunday-best'. My children wear hand-made sweaters every single day, I wrap a hand-made shawl round my shoulders while studying, and my labour-of-love blanket over my knees in the evenings.

And since my two favourite yarns have been discontinued (Stylecraft Luxury Pure Merino and Araucania Toconao Multy in case you've got any kicking around) I flirted with the idea of being DONE with knitting for a while.

And then the Dragon Baby grew. Again. So I guess I'll still be knitting a while yet.

At sixteen weeks old, I am feverishly making his fourth puerperium sweater. Because he is monstrous huge and the 3-6m version is busting at the seams. One of my friends says I must be making cream (I reckon it's Carnation condensed).

I'm using the remnants from two Araucania Toconao projects for my daughter, and so a bit of a pink colourway is being striped into his sweater. But I think it makes a lovely mix, and apparently boys used to wear pink in the old days before we all got our knickers in a gender-specific twist.

And where reading is concerned? Santa, that clever old fella, brought The Boss a beautiful gilt-edged hardback copy of Peter Pan in her stocking. We just finished it last night. The last chapter, where Peter returns and Wendy is grown up and has therefore forgotten how to fly, so her daughter Jane flies away with him instead... gulp, I could barely read it.

I wish I wasn't a grown up sometimes.

  1. Ah, I have no issue with mixing the boys knits up with a bit of pink ;) Especially when the yarn is that scrummy. Big fan of Peter Pan here too, your edition sounds great.

  2. Me too, me too...
I think it's quite fashionable these days for boys to wear pink, no? :)
Our baby, at 12 weeks, is just about growing out of the newborn size! High time for some 3-6 months knitting..

  4. My youngest daughter (15) has read Peter Pan over and over and over. She learned to love to read with Peter. Excellent book.

My friend adopted her son from Korea and apparently pink is common for young boys there. I'm certain it must be fine for dragons. :) Way to buck the status quo!

  5. Isn't the pink aversion for boys strange? Most of the men I know wear pink but still people seem to avoid dressing their sons in it. I just do not get it. I love that yarn x

  6. Watched Lucy Worsley on TV last night at Attingham Park, where the eighteenth century chap had his room done out in outrageous pink - good enough for him...

And yes, pink for a boy! Of course!
Let's cut away at this dumb genderizing. (not a word, I know.)

  9. pink is in! We have a teen clothing store that is just dripping with bright pinks oranges and reds all in the boys section. So I think you are being quite trendy :)

  10. I too love Toconao and admit to hoarding a bit. Those babies do love their mama's milk, don't they. I too was accused of making cream.

  11. and we have a picture of my husband's granddad in a little 'dress'--boys apparently wore them until they were potty trained (guess that might have been good incentive!!!!) I think your color mix is great.....that pink certainly doesn't scream at you!!!

  19. Oh I like the colours! My boy is growing out of all his 3-6 months clothes/knits as well. Your baby's sweater is going to be just lovely.

  20. That looks lovely, you're a great knitter, and the colours look well together. I dressed my first (a girl ) in blue as that's my favourite colour, an then I had five boys, so no pink there, but I'd dress a baby boy in pink hand me downs if I had the chance ;)

  21. They still make plenty of adult men's dress shirts in pink...it's supposed to be quite the fashion statement. Plus, your project looks gorgeous!
