notes from a blue funk

An uninspired photo to illustrate my uninspired creativity of late. See the lovely Orla Keily bag tucked away in the corner; my knitting bag? It's been there for two weeks. The piece mentioned in this post hasn't moved on a stitch since, and this one from nearly a month ago still lingers at the bottom of the bag, waiting for its ends to be woven in.

I can't seem to be bothered. And as each day goes by, I feel more guilty about it, which is not very logical or productive. And, evidenced by some the blogs I follow (but for how much longer, am I the only one who doesn't understand this impending Google connect business?), I'm not the only one feeling this way during February.

Any hints?

In a similar modus operandi, I'm still sort of reading The Tiger's Wife by Tea Obrecht. I felt like the writer needed to tell a lot of very detailed background stories to set up for the one she really wanted to tell, so the beginning was kind of long and drawn out. But I feel like I'm on to the real tale now, and it's really good. I'm enjoying it a great deal... in a slow and lazy kind of way.

  1. February will do that to you sometimes---too little daylight finally catching up! I know it may sound crazy, but some full spectrum lights (like Ott lights--great for knitting) might help. (I used to be a medical librarian, and annually did the SAD-seasonal affective disorder--search! Obviously, more to it than that--but it just might perk you up!!) That, or a indulge in a new wonderful cushy yarny treat!!! Hope you get your knitting mojo back soon.

    1. Thanks Steph - and you know a light lamp is definitely something on my shopping list for my next Scottish winter - the shortest days in our part of the world can mean little more than 6 or 7 hours of watery daylight, so I think a lamp is my only option for the future. However, I have to admit to having spent every afternoon this week in the full glare of the tropical sunshine in the swimming pool... I KNOW! No sympathy deserved! I'll never know another winter like it because we move back to the tundra in a few weeks, so I'm definitely trying to boost my Vitamin D levels while I can!

  3. I hate that funk, hope it passes soon! Sometimes casting on something frivolous (and quick!) helps me to snap out of it ;)

  4. There is always a funk and in time it passes like everything. I don't get it either. I suppose I should Google it. ;) Good luck and I hope you feel patient with yourself and give yourself all the time you need.

  5. my funky time was the last two months. i think the seasons are asking us to go within really. summer is for going outside of ourselves and being uber productive. winter is for inner reflection and not so productive. just what i think, sometimes i have to honor my need to be one with the seasons.

    :)

  8. Oh I think we all experience that type of creative dump. As others have said, this part of the year can be very blue and downright gray. Pour yourself a nice cup of coffee (or tea) and do something that cheers you up (including knitting) Every little bit helps. (I have to tell myself that!)
